57 Shades of Beige

Design color trends come and go. Currently, grey, the interior paint color trend, is on its way out. From my real estate agent’s perspective, I’m thrilled. It is hard to write a property description for homes that are a study in grey. Can you imagine reading this: “You’ll love this grey home’s vibe! It’s the color of conformism and industrial smokestacks! Once inside, you’ll be surrounded with the colors of dreary skies and ammunition!” From a fashion perspective, it’s the color of Katniss’s raggy clothes in the Hunger Games. From a political perspective it just feels like the color of war.
Thankfully, softer, more welcoming spaces that feel filled with character and warmth are the new ‘in.’ And the new ‘in’ color is beige – all 57 glorious shades.
I for one couldn’t be happier. Beige is chic. Vogue magazine even describes beigy clothes as “quiet luxury.” Interior designers say it pairs well with natural things like wood, wicker, and stone. Beige makes my life as a realtor easier too. I can describe beige interiors as soothing, bisque, cream, the color of really expensive cashmere, and sandy tropical beaches. This is so much better than saying “look at these lovely bullet-colored walls!”
As for politics, I hope beige is the new trend - forever. We need a soothing balm to the political chaos in this world. We need simple. We need peace. We all just need a little more beige.
